Amateur Feedback

Several team captains from the Amateur League were contacted and asked about their experiences in the league and for feedback about those experiences. Here is what a few of them had to say:

Here is a quick summary of what I’ve experienced:

What was most frustrating for me when starting out is the lack of actual game play footage on both the Grifball.com and GrifballHub.com websites. I wanted to get going on learning the basics, but there wasn’t anything like Video on Demand for MLGPro.com.

One good thing is that I’ve met some very nice people. When playing in the league, there are all kinds of nice and good sportsmanship things going on. My hat goes off to SSgthulka, who was the captain of LTFO:Delocated. He was one of the nicest players I’ve met. However, I have been paired up against some of the douchiest players from the league during the double exp weekend.

The first rule (Don’t be a douche) is probably the single best rule ever.

The Hub has a section called Grifball Tips which contains articles on basic Grifball tactics, how to do the Inside-Outside and Spawn Bonk launches, and general how-to’s. This is, however, by no means an extensive or comprehensive collection and is an area that the Hub is aiming to improve.

Thank you for thinking of us in the ammy league. It is funny that you talk about the pro players wanting to come to our league. I know playing better players makes me better but because of the growing number of pro coming to the amateur league doesn’t that defeat the purpose of separating our leagues? Somehow I seem to make a better team (of players who have never played or have not made it to play-offs) each season and end up getting stuck in a division with 2 or more teams who have 2 or more (ex) pro players and for that reason my team get robbed of making play-offs. So I guess if I had a suggestion it would be that if you’ve been in the pro league you should not be able to play in the amateur league. I guess if all teams with ex-pro players were forced into the same division it would be fine but I think we already have that Pro league and Amateur league. Thank you for your time.

This is a rather difficult situation to manage. Some players and teams with higher skill just like to have fun and aren’t interested in the high-intensity, ultra-competitive environment that the Pro League facilitates. However, the amateur league is not the appropriate outlet for these players either for the reasons you mentioned. Ideally a middle league, or perhaps even a recreational league, could be created.

From personal experience, I know that many amateur players don’t show up to games, and that forces their team to either reschedule or forfeit, which is a hassle week after week. Maybe you could do something on commitment.

Also, how about something about playing Grifball to have fun instead of win? I know that there are a few teams out there who would not check the time, forfeit in favor of their team when the other team didn’t show up an hour earlier, don’t bother to contact the other team, and not play the game (<-- personal experience right there). The AGLA was formed so people could have fun playing the game together, not so teams could submit forfeits week after week just so they can win a t-shirt. (you can quote me on that if you want). Those would be good topics to look into.

It is actually in the rules for this season that forfeits should not be submitted before the make-up week. Some teams play to win and some teams play for fun and currently there isn’t a way to separate the two. As mentioned above, a recreational league might be a solution and the logistics of such a possibility definitely deserve a closer look.
