@knd - If it's a collage, pictures are always a great place to start, but you might also want to find online news clippings, maybe screen capture tweets that deal with the issue, or even look up brief literary works such as a poem, written by the untouchables or about them. Hope this helps!

Those are some Great ideas Goose thank you soo much!!!

Alright, I'm in 8th grade hp English and I have no clue why I'm having trouble with the use of lie/lay, lying/laying, and laid/lain. Can anyone explain it in a way I might understand? Thanks! :)

What you're getting at is the difference between a transitive verb and an intransitive verb. The difference is straightforward: a transitive verb is an action done to a direct object. An intransitive verb does not take a direct object. So ask yourself: is the subject performing the action to something else? If there is a something (or someone) else, it's transitive. If not, intransitive.

With lie/lay for example, lie is the intransitive form, and lay is the transitive form. You just have to remember which is which.

"I lie down to sleep." I am performing an action, but I am not doing it to anything (or anyone) else, so this is intransitive. I myself am climbing into bed and crashing. Contrast with, "I lay the baby down to sleep," where I am still performing an action, but now the recipient of the action is the baby. I'm holding the baby in my arms, leaning over the bed, and setting the baby down. "I lay down to sleep" is incorrect.

And this extends to the gerunds (lying/laying) and the past participles (lain/laid). "I am lying down," means I am in bed, whereas "I am laying the baby down" means I am in the middle of the action of putting the baby in bed. And then "I had lain down" versus "I had laid the baby down." Always the transitive version takes a direct object to receive the action.

O! So could we also say that for lie and lay, it is lie if It is untouched and lay if it is touched?

I think you're asking me if, in this case, "laying" something down means you're touching something else. For that particular meaning, yes, that's the case. Although when it comes to transitive vs. intransitive, it's not always something physical. For instance, you can "lay the blame" on someone. In this case "the blame" is the direct object.

In general when you're dealing with a transitive/intransitive verb pair, it's looking for the direct object that will be your strategy for figuring out which to use.

Anybody know things about statistics? Apparently I need to learn some things, but my last stats class was about 7 years ago or so, and I haven't really had to use anything beyond a few t-tests, sometimes anovas, and common sense plus skepticism to avoid bias. It's tempting to just ignore this stuff and guess whenever stats questions show up, but I kinda feel like this should all be pretty intuitive once I understand what all the words mean, but I'm not there yet.

Thinking about prevalence vs. incidence; odds ratio vs. relative risk vs attributable risk; sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value is making me want to just go to sleep. What type of data/information/conclusions you can get out of a few different kinds of studies (case-control vs. cohort vs. cross-sectional) is almost making sense, I think. But talking about how much "power" a study has, people are mentioning power = (1 minus beta), but I don't know what beta means there.

This is all non-urgent, exam(s) is/are a while off but I'd like to finish studying this stuff and let it just chill somewhere in my head making sense while I move on to other things.

@ Cow - Power is the probability that the null hypothesis will be rejected when the null hypothesis is false , i.e., avoiding Type II error / accepting a hypothesis when it is false. Beta simply represents this kind of error.

That's the best I got in regards to stats.

@ Tyrgra - I took AP chem a long time ago, but I do remember Van Der Waalls. From what I understand, it's the sum (or total) of the attractive/repulsive force between molecules. Basically, it's the intermolecular bond between molecules due to force rather than a bond via electrons.

I have my exams coming up but I've missed lots of lessons due to illness. I'm most behind in history, specifically WWII. Can anyone quickly run through the major battles for me?
