A lot depends on what game-type you're playing, Vanilla or Dash. In Dash, assuming you're on sprint, use a burst of sprint when closing in on an enemy. This will give them less time to react and give you a better chance at the stiff.

It's a little tougher when you're playing Vanilla. A lot of strategies are somewhat luck based. A basic tip would be to wait until the last second to stiff. A lot of defenders like to wait until a runner stiffs (and misses) before they go for the lunge. So if you wait, you give them no chance to swing until you are already too close. However, this doesn't work against all defenders and not all defenders wait to swing. That brings me to my best bit of advice.

The BEST advice I could give is to get to know your enemy. By that I me that most defenders have a certain way that they like to approach the runner. Whether they wait till the last second, slice as soon as they see red, jump backwards and make you miss, etc, etc, etc. So, during a game, really focus on what each enemy player does. If a player jumps back every time you get close to them, make a note of that and prepare yourself for the next encounter. Normally, defenders stick to one strategy so once you learn what they do, use it against them.

The last bit of advice was the best I could give you. Being a good runner is about knowing your enemy, having good decision making skills (knowing when and when not to push), and a bit of luck :P I hope this helped at least a little. And as always, practice really does make perfect. A lot comes with experience.

If you're going for aggressive style with a bunch of stiffarming never jump towards your enemy. He will simply go to the side and easily take you out. Another thing, always kill one, retreat, kill one, retreat or else there's a high risk of loosing the ball. Never go 2 vs 1 except if you're able to trick them to kill eachothers with their hammers. If you go up against 2 sword defenders you're doomed. So avoid that.

Of course there's exceptions for everything though. :D

If you have a strong tanking team you probably don't need to be able to stiff arm, just be careful and always watch your back. Keep an eye on where all your opponents are, where your team are. Try and keep yourself, away from the opponents and close to your tanks. The number of times I've seen people run backwards into defenders behind them. Observation is a very underrated skill.

Stiff arms are about timing, hitting the right moment. On host it's easier as you have a better time to react but in experience it's better to hold it, try and hold off until you can't miss. So many times you see people punch way to early, I bottle and do too sometimes, so just try and hit as late as possible because if you miss your hit you're an open target (unless you're Ezy).

Learning some moves like the flowers and the barrel roll in Dash can help to and if you're pushed back to your own spawn with enemies with swords around you, don't cross your bomb point. Get to the corner and try and hold out or try and get the bomb as far away as you can. Never give the enemies a chance at your bomb on your own spot with no way to defend it.

I may not be a trick runner, but I know my muffins

Don't run into the back of your own tank and get betrayed.

I find this seems to be working pretty well for me lately. I don't know why I never thought of it sooner. But yeh, if you don't pull host, don't try that.

I always like to constantly move from one side of the court to other. By doing this I'm drawing the defenders right to my tanks. Lesser experienced defenders will often not be paying attention to where your tanks are and still be focused on you. At the very least they may end up betraying each other once they realize they've been drawn into a trap and attempt to fight their way out of it.

It's always a smart idea to let your tanks do the bulk of the work and if you can make it easier for them, that's even better.

True. Especially when you have Honchopotamus on your team, like yourself. :)

I second the calls to let your tanks do the work. IMO, punching with the bomb should be a last resort for a runner. The job of the runner is to keep the bomb safe and to advance it down the court as far as you safely can.

I usually only stiff-arm in two places: When I'm defending myself and can't run away, and when I'm about to score but there is a defender on the plant.

Let the tanks tank. Let the runner run.

I third the let your tanks do the work but if you do have to stiff kill one retreat kill one retreat you CAN try fancy footwork if you HAVE to but 9 times out of 10 it won't work most important DO NOT BE RECKLESS like black Vulcan our sub runner check my other post (top of next page) for a more indepth article

In matchmaking? Jump, spin, crouch and punch randomly. Enemies often die, whiff, or panic and hammer launch you into the plant for a score.

Other places...try not to run across your own plate when getting surrounded by enemies. They will love to slice you above the pad, grab the bomb from the air and land on the plate for a score...don't give them the opportunity. If you must, be sure your punch is good.

Stay with your tanks and/or let them know where you're at. Working as a team is important...if the runner is going up the left but all the tanks are on the right, the runner will likely be surrounded soon.

When you're running in, expect to be spawned on. Be ready to punch/dodge an enemy even if they appear suddenly right infront/behind you with no warning.
