You’re looking through the thermal scope of your ACR and see two guys. You open fire and spray them with hot lead. With two enemies down, you’re able to call in a Harrier jet to bomb the target area, engaging its hover capability to effectively gun down enemy combatants with its cannon. The Harrier makes four kills, enabling you to call in an Apache helicopter which rains down pandemonium on your foes as they spawn. When enough have died by your hand, you’re given a tactical nuclear warhead to win the game. Welcome to MW2.
As a huge fan of Call of Duty, I highly anticipated this game’s arrival. I was overly skeptical at Modern Warfe developer Infinity Ward being able to match, much less surpass, the quality of Call of Duty 4. But I can tell you right now, they blew my mind. Not only is this game better then World at War, it’s the best game I have ever played. This is coming from a guy who does not like First Person Shooters much.
Graphics: If you are fortunate enough to play this in glorious HD, you might not be able to tell it’s a game. With realistic weather conditions and environment interaction, this game feels like you are on the battlefield. Waste and grass blows along in the wind like it would naturally and clouds fly over head and actually obscures sunlight to cast shadows. This environment is alive, almost like interacting with a BluRay quality movie. Realistic character movements have been greatly improved on from the last game making each character look realistic. Simply put, the graphics will blow you mind.
Sound: There’s nothing like hearing an AC130 gunship shoot its 105MM cannon and send both enemies and debris flying. Each gun and explosive device sounds distinctively different and accurate. The environment sounds have also vastly improved. You can hear so much ambient noise from the urban levels it’s truly a wonder. Bullet sounds change depending on the material you are shooting around. For instance, if you are shooting from a tin shed, the gun sounds echoes with a metal twang, whereas shooting from a wooden cabin provides a slightly more muffled sound. Also, the in-game communication of the characters (not the people on your headset but the characters in the game) is simply amazing. They call out important information and let you know if your friend has killed someone. In campaign it goes a step further by telling you exactly where enemies are located and what they are doing.
Playability: Do I really even need to talk about this? There is a reason over three million people are on the leader boards. Modern Warfare 2 offers a vast variety of different classes to suit your play style. From camping to run-and-gun, from full silence to explosive firepower, this game offers everything. The perk system is expansive and allows many fun ways to play the game. With hundreds of fun titles and emblems to choose from, you can customize the way you appear to other people in kill cams and in the lobby. You can unlock these by completing special challenges as you play the multiplayer portion of the game.
Controls: Although the customizable options for the controls are preset, they are easy to pick up even if you are new to the game. There are no secret combos that make you better and I have actually modeled my Halo 3 settings after the Modern Warfare settings.
Overall: This is easily the Game of the Year. Expect Infinity Ward to run away at the Video Game Awards and for Modern Warfare 2 to lead the charge. Modern Warfare 2 has taken the spot as my favorite game of all-time. The only drawback to the game is that sometimes there are server issues with multiplayer (finding a game can take a bit of time when finding the first lobby) after you get into a lobby, though its smooth sailing from there on out. I have experienced maybe 2 laggy games. Considering there are over 3 million people playing this game, this issue should be resolved with future server upgrades. If you have any question on buying this game, it’s a no-brainer. The only way you could possibly disappointed with Modern Warfare 2 is if you never play it.
Well that opening is really unrealistic when I am playing against that Harrier strike and apache. Both would be shot down moments after entering my range for heat seaking rockets. I also have gotten so good at it that as soon as it comes into play they dont have a chance to pop flares to stop me. Then I go around and Ninja people lmao.
i just got it today and i love it!! hopefully i can get better in MM, because Tex can verify that my suckiness was astronomically high. although i did save his ass a few times… lol but anyway great review, its pretty much the final reason i ended up choosing this over forza 3. seeing as how i drive fast in real life anyway :P
